2009 Climate Camp

Climate Camp in Newcastle last year saw 1,600 people come together to build a strong community climate movement to stand up to dirty coal.

They learnt from each other during workshops on climate change science, on building wind turbines, and on the philosophy and practice of direct action. The week culminated in a peaceful direct action, that brought the world's largest coal port to a standstill.

This year, Australia is hosting four Climate Camps.

Camps have already been held in Hazelwood in Victoria and Port Augusta in South Australia, with another planned for Collie in Western Australia in December.

In NSW, the Climate Camp will be from
Friday 9th to Sunday 11th October in Helensburgh.

[ Helensburgh is just 40 minutes south of Sydney, easily accessible by train - it's on the South Coast line. ]
Note however, that new train timetables come into effect on that Sunday.

The focus of the Climate Camp will be Australia's oldest coal mine, owned by the world's largest private coal company Peabody.

An expansion of the mine has just been approved, extending its destructive operations for another 23 years.

The mine is set to release some 10 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The NSW Government has allowed Peabody to mine directly under Sydney's water catchment, which has already had devastating effects through riverbed cracking and subsidence.

Opposition to coal is mounting.

You can join in this show of
people-power to counteract the
influence of the greenhouse mafia.

You can come for an hour,
an afternoon, a day or all three days,
or just for the action on Sunday 11th.
