Walk Against Warming
Walk Against Warming - 2007

As Winston Churchill famously said – 'Never, Ever Give Up'

With a new Federal government in power, (one which seems to be moving in the right direction in regard to climate change), it is tempting to think we could leave them to take appropriate action now and get back to our own affairs.

However, Guy Pearse, in his book High and Dry, which blew the whistle on the Greenhouse Mafia, says:

"Whatever the election outcome, however, we should not make the mistake of assuming that it will resolve the issue.

The forces of 'carbon capture' will continue to chip away at whomever is in power and they will redouble their efforts at the state level – especially if Labor wins.

Forcing and sustaining a responsible greenhouse policy will depend on continued public scrutiny and pressure."

In an Op-Ed piece in Crikey (25.11.07), he warns that:

'The delay forces' who captured John Howard have a big foot in the door.

They are deeply imbedded in sections of business, the media, and the Canberra bureaucratic and lobbying establishment.

They have plenty of good links into the Labor Party at the state and federal level too'.

So we at Citizens Climate Campaign feel the need to resume our self-appointed task of assisting you to chivvy our state and federal politicians on the issue of climate change.

We hope you will stay with us and continue your efforts to let our politicians know we are watching and want strong action and policies on climate change as soon as possible.

We leave you with another, more optimistic quote, from Michael Pusey, University of NSW academic (Sydney Morning Herald 15.12.07):

"Climate change presents a nation-building opportunity not seen since the end of World War II.

Facing up to global warming has the potential to focus our national imagination in the same way.

It presents us with challenges that obviously call, not only for incremental changes at the household level, but also for whole-of-government action at the national level."
