Walk Against Warming
Walk Against Warming - Sydney, 4 November 2006 - photo by Sam Hendel

Our position is that Australian politicians in the two major political parties are not yet representing the will or the interests of the Australian people in their current response to climate change.

Former World Bank economist Sir Nicholas Stern, in his report to the British government in 2006, warned that the world had only 10 to 15 years to avoid catastrophic climate change.

The Federal and NSW governments continue to speak only of "clean" coal and perhaps nuclear options for reducing Australia's contribution to carbon emissions.

However scientists say that neither geosequestration nor nuclear could deliver any cuts to emissions in the next 15 years.

Polls are increasingly showing public support for renewable energy options which can bring immediate reductions in carbon emissions with safe, proven technologies.

Increasing numbers of Australian businesses are demonstrating their awareness that climate change is a threat to their economic viability. The National Farmers Federation president has described climate change as "potentially the biggest issue Australian agriculture has ever faced" (Canberra Times 13.3.07).

In spite of all this, there is no sense of urgency or real commitment by the Australian or state governments to grapple with this issue, or show visionary leadership to the Australian people.

If the government has no vision, then the people must give them one.

As ordinary citizens, we can do this by showing our continuing strong support for effective action. We can add our voices to all those others, until it becomes impossible for the government to ignore the will of the people of Australia.

The Citizens Climate Campaign offers you a quick, easy, effective way to make your voice heard, to influence our decision makers.
