Take
Direct Action

Speaking recently via video link at the forum Curing Australia's Coal Addiction, journalist and social activist George Monbiot spoke of the need for direct action, saying "the media cannot ignore action".

He said direct action grabs the attention of government, and is very powerful if accompanied by letter writing, on-line petitions and letters to the editor.

Young people from the Camp for Climate Action, held on Sunday 13th July in Newcastle, proved him correct.

Their protest march against the expansion of the coal industry gained good coverage on television news and in the press, when they took direct action to halt all coal trains at the Carrington Coal Terminal.

Now a direct action which includes political lobbying has been organised.

A Climate Protection Bill has been drawn up by members of community climate groups across Australia.

It comprehensively addresses the causes of Australia's spiraling greenhouse gas emissions, and proposes workable solutions to stem these emissions, protecting the future for our children, the world's most vulnerable communities and our fragile planet.

Federal Independent MP Tony Windsor is planning to introduce it as a Private Members Bill later this year.

Thousands of Australians are signing postcards urging politicians to support the Bill.

The campaign will culminate in a People’s Climate Bill Rally,
to hand-deliver the postcards to our Federal parliamentarians.

Supporters are urged to gather in Canberra at

Reconciliation Place - on the shores of Lake Burley Griffith between the High Court and National Library.

on 12.30pm Sunday 21st September

This campaign is inspired by the success of a community driven Climate Change Bill in the UK, which has achieved laws to cut greenhouse pollution and promote a clean energy future.

To take direct action to support the Bill you can:

  • Support the Climate Protection Bill by adding your name to the online petition.
[The petition is in the light blue box. Add your details - including typing the provided characters into the Are you human space - then click I Support Climate Protection.]

  • Download the postcard* (it is a 77KB PDF), print off copies and give it to others who might be interested.
You will need to add your local Federal MP's name, then pop the completed postcards in an envelope and mail it to the following address by Wednesday 10 September. They can then be presented at the rally.
